The Snake River “Birds of Prey” National Conservation Area is located just 30 miles (as the eagle flies) from Boise, Idaho. At its heart is the spectacular Snake River canyon that was created by the great Bonneville flood. This world famous area was controversial in its beginning and was given protection only after a long and extensive research and education program. This was instrumental in convincing Congress to create and set aside these 482,000 plus acres of raptor nesting and hunting grounds.

Snake River, Idaho
Birds of Prey Expeditions

Discover our fun & informative Idaho travel experience as featured in The New York Times, Audubon, Sunset, Northwest Traveler, American Falconry, National Geographic, Idaho, and Horizon Air magazines...

We have a special interest in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, and for 30 years have offered a wide variety of field trips into the area. On our trips, we explain the natural forces that created this unique area and what makes it so attractive to nesting raptors. We also talk about the ecological challenges facing the area today and mix in discussions of geology and history of the surrounding area.

Even though the trips are very educational, they’re a lot more fun than sitting in a classroom. You will have a chance to view many species of “Birds of Prey.” Some of the birds we hope you will see include the golden eagle; prairie falcon; red-tailed, ferruginous, marsh, and Swainson’s hawks; American kestrels; turkey vultures; barn, great horned, short-eared, screech, burrowing, and long-eared owls; and ravens.

Meet Your Hosts:

Steve and Jill Guinn have been operating Birds of Prey Expeditions for over 30 years and have been involved in all facets of raptor education and protection. Together with Morley Nelson, they have escorted thousands of visitors from around the world through the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area.

Special Guest Hosts:

Come join Tyler and Norman Nelson, the sons of the late, renowned conservationalist and falconer Morley Nelson as they guide you on a very special trip deep inside the Snake River Canyon. They are two-time EMMY Award winning cinematographers and have spent most of their lives exploring, filming, and climbing raptor nests in the National Conservation Area. Learn how they filmed the famous scenes in the numerous Walt Disney movies they worked on. Discover the best times of day to locate, identify and film raptors in the canyon with your still camera. Enjoy the spiritual surroundings and aerial acrobatics of the world's fastest animals. Check out their work at www.echofilms.com.

It is a calm and safe ride in large boats with bus-type seating and ramps that make for easy boarding. Both the bus and the boat are equipped with PA systems so everyone can hear the information being given. On day trips, there is limited walking, unless you choose to. On all trips with food, we are sure you will enjoy our deluxe buffet-style lunch.
